Bromo e vulcano Ijen: ammirare l’alba sopra le nuvole

Bromo.

Bromo. The island of Java in Indonesia was the second stop on my summer trip (if you missed the first leg of my travel you can read here). We arrive in the chaotic Yogyakarta with a direct flight from Singapore and here we stay two days to visit the city and the two important temples of Borobudur and Prambanan. In Yogyakarta we also book the tour of three days that will bring us to the south of the island in order to discover two of the most spectacular volcanoes of Java: Bromo and Ijen. After 10 hours on a rickety bus and a lots of traffic we reach the foot of Bromo still “alive”. We wake up at 4.00 am and get on a jeep in order to reach a lookout point from which to admire the sun rise. It is very cold but the view that can be seen, as the sun rises is spectacular. We jump on the jeep again and drive into the caldera of the volcano, the landscape around us is muffled and unreal, like being on the moon. At 9:00 am we leave again to reach the second leg of the tour, the Ijen volcano, one of the most extraordinary places I have ever visited in my life. Achieving this wonder is not easy, however, you need nearly 5 hours of walking in the night in order to get into the crater of the volcano and admire the spectacle of blue flames (the blue flames derive from the chemical process of sulfur transformation. Molten sulfur, combined with hydrochloric acid, gives off flames that can reach 5 meters in height, but this show can be seen only at night). From there we go back on the crater rim and wait for the dawn, the view is amazing and indescribable, the vision of the green lake with the hollow of sulfur is so beautiful to take our breath away, while behind us the sun rises, we are above the clouds!
